Some critical gear defects such as cracks at the tooth root fillet manifest themselves from early stages of development as persistent incremental shifts over time from normal phase modulation of the meshing excitation resulting from the transmission error inthe motion a of gear pair. Cureent use of phase demodulation techniques focuses on detecting a point at which the manitude of modulation exceeds a statistically determined baseline sufficiently that the existence of an anomaly can be deteced, by which point the defect may be significantly advanced. By taking advantage of ensemble operation on modulation functions obtained sequentially over time at commensurate loading and speed conditions, methods can be developed to identify a distinguishable modulation feature measuring the progression of a defect at a significantly earlier stage of its development.
