Grain orientation clusters in the primary recrystallization of non-oriented electrical steels

Samples with different hot-band grain sizes (22, 120 and 500mum) were cold rolled and annealed. Etch pit and EBSD were used to obtain microtexture information. Initial hot band grain size did not affect the main features of the deformation texture, but promoted strong differences in the recrystallization texture. In 120 and 500 mum samples, the (110)(001) Goss component intensity increased after final recrystallization. The 500 mum sample also presented a strong cube-on-face (100)(001) component. Clusters of grains of different average sizes (10 or 50mum, typically) were observed. Microtexture results showed that the grain size clusters are related to grain orientation. Goss component occurred in clusters of small grain size. The larger grain size clusters presented a random texture, including the cube-on-face component. It suggests that these grains were formed from deformed grains with low Taylor M-factor, probably the (100)(011) component that was present in the deformation texture.
