The market volume for fiscal year 2000 in America for new pipeline construction and renovation of aging pipelines would exceed 20 billion dollars. At one time, new pipelines for sanitary sewers were constructed of unlined concrete pipe. Storm sewers were of either concrete pipe or corrugated metal pipe. For sanitary sewer force mains and water transmission pressure lines, we used primarily ductile iron and pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipe. In 2000 however, a major segment of sanitary sewers would be constructed of plastics, either with a smooth wall or with profiles, cores, and ribs. In storm market, a major share would be of corrugated polyethylene. The pressure market would go to PVC and HDPE in smaller sizes and to welded steel in larger diameters in major volumes. In 2000, we Americans will build over 50 percent of our new pipelines with plastics, mostly with PVC and HDPE. The above trends are very different from most countries around the globe. In the renovation market, 10 years ago, Insituform, was the only game in town offering Cast In Place Pipe (CIPP). Now, there are numerous players in the CIPP technology alone in America, and the winner is chosen primarily on price and in some cases, based on superior track record and prior established relationships.
