Thermal comfort requirements in a hot humid region with special reference to bahrain

This study is an attempt to define thermal comfort requirements for university students in the hot-humid region of Bahrain. An extensive field survey was conducted among randomly selected university students. The field survey dealt with the following aspects: - centre dot Recording climatic variables, which influence thermal sensation, these are; ambient temperature, radiant temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity. centre dot A questionnaire format was distributed to the students while they are attending a lecture. The format contains five main sections, for recording the following information: - i) age and sex group; ii) characteristics of the indoor thermal environment; iii) the student's clothing ensembles and activity level; iv) a seven point scale reflecting the thermal sensation of the student; v) the student is asked to record his/her preference with the objective of improving the surrounding environment. A general finding of this study indicated that the indoor thermal environment of all the lecture rooms of Bahrain University, where the field curvey took place, did not satisfy optimum thermal comfort requirements during the cold method of 1999. The conclusions drawn from this study was then compared with Fanger's Thermal Comfort Equation. It seems that there is a reasonable agreement between the recorded values obtained from this study and Fanger's predicted mean vote.
