Renewable energy development in himachal pradesh

In view of the finite availability of the conventional energy sources and the associated adverse environmental impacts of their usage, the shift to renewable sources is inevitable. In addition to awareness generation, what is needed in general is a step-up in R&D efforts to bring down the cost per unit of energy from most of the renewable energy sources. Himachal Pradesh, an Indian State located in the northwest part of the country in the lap of the Himalayas, has an ideal environment for harnessing the flowing water and solar energy. The paper outlines the initiatives taken by Himachal Pradesh in popularising the use of renewable energy sources with special emphasis on the development of small hydropower, installation of hydrams and propagation of passive solar housing technology.
