Over the past decade the Contract Electronic Manufacturing Industry has developed from a loose collection of companies with extra capacity or technology vision to a many-tiered, segmented, and powerful industry. Authored by a founder of a startup CEM formed in 1993, this paper briefly reviews these dynamic developments and how this growing company charted its way through this sea of change, discusses some of the pitfalls found along the way, and presents some alternatives for future growth in the contract manufacturing of electronic products and assemblies.
