Traditionally, materials used in industrial and marine lightweight gas turbines have been closely related to those utilised in aero engines to realise the benefits of commonality. Variations were necessary to take account of factors such as mode of operation and operating environment, predominantly affecting turbine components. Over recent years, increaisng turbine temperatures and advances in coating technology have lessened the frequency of these changes. In today's climate, cost is a prime driver. Material selection and alternative technologies, such as coating, are inseparable for cost effectiveness. Repairability is an issue of increasing importance, contributing to the reduction of overall cost of ownership. Further, environmental legislation is now of prime importance with respect to both engine emissions and material use.
