Fluidized bed sludge incinerators must be operated over a wide range of load conditions while keeping the strict environmental regulations for the gaseous pollutants. In the present work the efficiency of two measures for increasing the flexibility of a sludge incinerator with respect to load wee investigted. Enrichment of the combustion air with oxygen was examined as a means for increasing the load whereas flue gas recirculation was tested for the casw of part load operation. The investigations were made in a semi-technical scale fluidized bed incinerator wit three different kinds of sludges. The current investigations include the influence on the NOx, N_2O and CO emissions. It is shown that for single-stage combustion the sludge throughput could be increased up to about 40
