The present paper reports the simulaneous application of experimental and computer-aided methods in an industrial-scale furnace of the Neckarwerke Stuttgart AG to optimise the wall armosphere in order to avoid corrosion problems. Results are presented suitable for the assessment of the reliability of the wall atmosphere predictions obtained from the 3D-furnace simulation tool AIOLOS. The predictios of three different wall air configuration sre compared with the measured values of wall atmosphere gathered at 150 measurement points which are distributed over the furnace walls. Furthermore a comparison with comprehensive velocity measyrements in the burner near field is presented because of the importance of the flow field for the resulting wall atmosphere. The results indicate a high reliability of the predictions provided that at furnace model with high spatial resoultion is used. The furnace model used contains apoproximately 2 million nodes. Nevertheless, the usage of 16 processors on a parallel vector computer leads to response times of 7 h for a fully coupled furnace simulation. THis is sfficiently short to derive industrial relevant decisions within the usual project time frames.
