In a climate of increasing concern for the environment, restrictions are being placed on allowable emissions of NO_x from natural gas furnaces. The Canadian Gas Reseach Institute initiated development of a nw, very-low-NOx burner, work that CAGCT subsequenctly took over. The result is a burner that produces less than 30 ppm NOx under maximum firing rate and air-preheat conditions. The burner consists of ring of alternating fuel and air ports with the angel that the air ports make with the burner axis being less than that of the fuel ports. THis arrangement relaizes FODI (Fuel/Oxideant Direct Injection) strategy by postponing the mixing of oxidant and fuel strenams until they have both been significantly diluted by entrained furnace gases that have been cooled by furnace heat load.
