The erosive wear of fibrous aluminosilicate insulating materials has been studied to establish the mechanisms of damage and to obtain quantitiative measurements of erosion rate for sue in plant design. The damage to fibrous ceramic components was examined for two cases: attack by gas flow without incorporated particles, and the case of impact of solid particles such as ash or cinder. The authors reported results of a study of the first aspect at INFUB 1997. Experminental resutls from this work are being combined with mathematical models in order to predict the erosion damage and hence the life-span of fibre linings in furnaces and boilers.
