The paper presents the reasons which led to the modernisation of a OP-230 boiler of steaming capacity of 230t/h. problems which arouse after the modernsation, and ways of solving them. In early 90-ies many Polish power plants as wel as heating and power stations started modernisation with the aim to limit the emission of nitric oxides and carbon monoxide. Following this tendency the combustion chamber in the OP-230 boiler in Gdansk Heating and Electric Power Station was reconstructed. Moreover NOx low-emission caoal burners were installed instead of classical swirling burners. In opertion the boiler fulfileld the standards of environmental protection. After four years from the reconstruction the boiler broke down due to corrosion of the rear water-wall. Corrosion rate was in the range of 0.5-0.8mm/years. Steel watage was so advanced that almost the entire rear water-wall had to be repaced. The investigation fo reasons of steel degradation started. Moreover the remedy for high temeprture corrosion was looed for as well.
