Abstract: This paper presents new finite element (FE) approach to modeling edge effects in beam sandwich structures. Developed approach is based on the mixed 2D and beam FE models conjuncted by means of the penalty function method. Several tests of sandwich beams and frames bending with different boundary conditions and laminate types were solved in order to verify the accuracy of new FE methods, algorithms and software based on the mixed 2D & Beam FE models. The influence of penalty factor on the spectral condition number of stiffness matrix and on the residual norma of solution/constraint for the different isotropic and sandwich structures was investigated. The FE analysis of real sandwich beam joint is presented. Results of this analysis show the advantages of the developed approach.!6
