Small satellites using low earth orbit are finding increasing use for new services in recent years. With shorter development time and smaller budgets, they can fulfill many of the functions of their larger counterparts. Generally, they are lofted into an orbit which is above the earth from several hundreds kilometers to several thousands kilometers. Compared with geostationary orbit (GSO) satellites, they have some advantages such as reduced space loss and antenna size, smaller time delay, the availability of Doppler effect for position determination, lower cost, more flexible, although less powerful.
