This paper addresses the issue of alighment in free-space optical interconnects (FSOIs) by investigatin optical configurations that are inherently tolerant to misaligment. This is doen by evaluating different designs for a module which integrates an optoelectronic_VLSI (OE-VLSI) chip with one or two lens array components. The designs are compared using a common set of system parameters and closed-form analytical expressions are derived for misalignment tolerances and system scalability. It is shown that the alighability of a module can be adqueately specified by the product of its lateral and tilt misalighnment tolerance and this product is an invariant of the system. Misalignment-toleran configurations are identified and general design guidelines are formulated.
