This paper presents the results of measurements of the in-line force coefficients for a horizontally oscillating circular cylinder in linearly stratified fluid of limited depth and in two-layer system of miscible fluids with the layer of high density gradient (pycnocline) in between. The experimental technique is based on the Fourier analysis of impulse response functions of the cylinder. It is shown that stratification has a strong influence on the hydrodynamic forces acting on a body. It is found that, as the depth of uniformly stratified fluid (or the pycnocline thickness) decreases, the power radiated with internal waves also decreases and the maximum of the radiated wave power shifts toward lower non-dimensional oscillation frequencies.
