Initial Study of Hydrogen Production Demonstrating System by Gas-cooled Reactor HTR-10 in China

The 10MW High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTR-10) is now being constructed in China and its first criticality is to be attained in the year of 2000. From the viewpoint of solving global environmental problem and keeping HTGRs sustainable development, hydrogen (H_2) production system by using high temperature nuclear heat of HTGRs is an attractive way because HTGRs is a safe, economic energy source and hydrogen is an ideal energy of next century. For hydrogen producing demonstration by HTR-10, various methods are introduced and compared which including catalytic reforming of natural gas with steam, iodine-sulfur process (IS) for water decomposition, and gasification of coal etc. With the development of HTGRs in the world and energy strategy of China, it is feasible to adopt gasification of coal as the first priority. Thermal and chemical analysis, design concept and principal parameters are presented.
