A new updraft free-exit-flow hydropower turbine system is designed for low-head applications with the following intended objectives: centre dot to enhance tailrace water quality; centre dot to reduce system construction and maintenance costs and the time requirement for hydropower development efforts. centre dot to minimize fish mortality during passage through the turbine; and centre dot to improve hydroturbine mechanical performance; Reported in this paper are results obtained from theoretical, experimental, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of the new turbine. These preliminary results positively verified the stated operational characteristics of the new turbine.
