During the past decade, many new techniques have bene created which use a combination of electric and hydrodynamic effects to separate fine particles, dropolets, and bubbles from a fluid. We will present results of our recent theoretical and experimental studies of two main phenomena, specifically, electric-field-induced aggregation and dielectrophoresis in colloids, which form the basis for electro-separation in a flowing suspension subjected to a high-gradient strong AC field.
