P-RC alkaline peroxide mechanical pulps from aspen, beech, birch and cottonwood were investigated for their pulp handsheet property development. The results showed that among the hardwoods studied, birch gave the highest bulk, cottonwood second, and the other three were about the same when compared at the same tensile strenght. Tensile energy absorption property followed the similar trend, while burst property development followed a slightly different order: brich aspen approxapprox beech approxapprox cottonwood > maple. In the second part of this investigation, using silver maple, it was found that the P-RC process was able to produce a much higher bulk than the kraft pulpig process when compared at a similar tensile strength. The reasons for the difference ware discussed in terms of different fiber separatio mechanisms and fiber chemistry.
