The various tools and techniques for Capacity Planning and Performance Modeling for UNIX systems using Oracle databases have been cataloged well in various papers and books [GRUM97, CHU98, COHE96, CRAI98]. This paper draws from a number of studies done by the author on large UNIX servers using Oracle, concentrating on some of the limitations and methods for alleviating these. The main tools and techniques are available free to the average performance analyst. The art to succeeding in this type of situation involves designing the data collection strategy to closely fit the objectives of the study. The material is organized around a case study of a particularly complex application.
