A new regulatory standard for arsenic of 10μg/l in potable water will be introduced at the endof 2003. Severn Trent Water has 17 sites which will be affected by this legislation and hasbeen undertaking development work in order to implement a programme of treatment plantconstruction to meet this deadline.The company recognised the need for process development work back in 1995 and instigatedlaboratory and pilot scale studies to determine the best available treatment for arsenicremoval.The treatment process selected utilises granular ferric media as an adsorbent, being the mostcost effective and requiring the least operational input.This paper describes the work which was undertaken which led to the decision to proceedwith the construction of a 20Ml/day prototype plant that was used to value engineer thedesign for the remaining 16 treatment plants.
