The fire performance of several materials commonly used in retail and other occupancies was investigated using the ISO 9705 test method and a modified version of the test method. The modified test procedure allows the evalaution of a material in the presence of automatic sprinklers. Heat release rates and ceiling temperatures were measured, along with times to flashover. Sprinkler and smoke detector activation times were determined, and the effectiveness of sprinklers in reducing temperatures, limiting the potential growth of a fire and delaying or preventing flashover was also evalauted. Test results and possible applications of these results are presented in this paper, along with a discussion of important issues in performing sprinklered fire tests.
