Metallic sand is already well recognized as a filter media in the spinning of polyester and polyamide yarn. Poweder is used in loose form in packs or in the form of sintered stainless steel filter parts. "Loose pack" filter powders are sometime heard of as filter sand, metallic sand or shattered metal powder. Originally the type of filter media used in the packs was a mineral sand like alumina or silica sand. Therefrom the name. Today, some mineral sand is still used but on modern installations for continuous use, practically only metal powder is used.
