The topic of the spatial variability of seismic ground motions evaluated from ata recorded at dense instrument arrays is addressed in this study. The stochastic techniques used for the estiamtio nfo the spatial variability, and the itnerpretation of the coherency, with brief reference to its effect on lifelines, are described. Soem empirical and semi-empirical coherency models are presented, and their validity and limitations discussed. Finally, a newly developed approach, that views the spatial variability as deviations in amplitudes and phases of recorded data around a coherent approximation of the seismic motions and recognizes physical causes in this variability, is presented.
