Wind-induced response control of a slender tall building with active-passive nass damper

The authors have executed research and developmnt of an active-passive mass damper (hereinafter referred to as APMD) since 1990(Fujita et al. 1992). This mass damper has been installed in a slender tall building with an aspect ratio of eight since November 1997. The mass damper system can function mainly as an active mass damper to effectively control moderate vibrations of the building caused by seasonal winds or weak earthquakes and also can function as a passive mass damper against strong winds or earthquakes. Simulation analysis of wind-induced response, forced vibration tests and observation of behaviors in moderate winds were carried out to investigate the response control performance fo the mass damper system. Through the results obtained by these investigations, it was concluded that the mass damper system was quite effective for the response control of the slender tall building against wind loads.
