Impact of Glazing on the Power Requirement of Air Conditioning

This study addresses the advantages of using energy efficient high performance glazing in countries with hot climates such as Kuwait. An office building was considered in which different types of glazing systems were tested using a comprehensive building energy simulation program. For each glazing type, the electrical capacity for an air-cooled chiller was calculated in terms of the watts per square meter of living area. In the simulation, ASHRAE's (1997) recommendations with regards to fresh air requirements and casual gains were considered. The results indicated that in the presence of stringent energy conservation measures, the maximum glazing area is governed by the type and performance of glazing used. With high performance glazing such as that incorporating heat mirror films, glazing areas of 40% can be considered without sacrificing the indoor thermal comfort.
