Discrete model of a power system consisting of 64 generators with boundary conditions is used for demonstrating the electromechanical wave propagation phenomenon. The more realistic simulation of non-uniform distribution of generators is also studied. The simulation model includes the transmission line admittances, generator internal admittances, and loads. Numerical simulations based on the swing equation demonstrate electromechanical wave propagation with some interesting properties. The coefficients of reflection are calculated from the numerical results. A clear understanding of these and related phenomena will lead to innovative and effective countermeasures against unwanted trips by the protection systems which may lead to system blackouts.
