Electric utilities throughout the world are frequently faced with the need to spend large amounts of limited resources on distribution system expansion. Distribution automation may provide a tool to achieve maximum utilization of the utility's physical plant in addition to a high quality of service to its customers. A computer-aided approach can be used to simulate distribution automation functions before actually implementing them, which can save substantial amounts of time and money. This paper presents the analysis of a distribution automation plan based on modeling a section of the distribution system in Egypt. The simulation will provide potential benefits such as improved efficiency due to the implementation of distribution automation. Egypt can serve as a model for other developing countries since it shares some socioeconomic conditions that are widespread in developing countries.
