Two procedures have been investigated for the prediction of the fatigue lives of fibre-reinforced plastics. The first is based on a parametric model of fatigue behaviour of a wide range of laminates, while the second, less well developed at present, is based on the use of artificial neural networks. Both of these methods offer the possibility of predicting the lives of laminates in the virgin condition and after incurring damage by low-velocity impact. The parametric model is also able to make conservative predictions of the lives of laminates for which relatively little fatigue data are available provided experience with other laminates is taken into account.
