The paper introduces the architecture of emotional agents for human-machine interaction, by means of intelligent multimodal interfaces. An emotional agent possesses rational knowledge, emotional and reactive capabilities, and is able to interact with the external world, including other agents. Emotional agents can give rise to more effective, natural, and stimulating interaction with humans. Our model and related agent architecture has been developed and applied in several multimedia-multimodal application environments, shortly described in the paper.
