The paper describes a method for the preliminary design of a whole multistage turbomachine. The design problems relevant to each rotor and stator of several stages are simultaneously solved. A simplified axisymmetric model of a 3d turbomachine is obtained by replacing rotors and stators with volume of forces. The tangential components of such volume forces, responsible for flow deflection, are prescribed as design data. Rotors and stators are seen as stream surfaces of the relative and absolute motion, respectively, their geometry is determined according to a time marching integration of the Euler equations.
