The authors have proposed an influence function mehtod by which stress intensity factor, K, of surface cracks can be calculated easily for arbitrarily distributed surface stresses. They have developed the data base of influence coefficients, K_ij, for various types of surface cracks through a series of finite element analyses. These are semi-elliptical surface crack and quarter- elliptical corner crack in a rectangular plate, respectively, part-elliptical surface crack in a round bar, and longitudinal and circumferential surface crack on the inner or outer surface of a pipe.
