Steel trusses are very efficient structural members. Steel trusses in this paper, commonly referred to as open web steel joists, can span long distances and support large loads relative to the weight of the steel joists. In the past 30 years research has been completed looking at the additional benefits associated with making the steel joists composite with the supported steel deck and concrete slabs. This paper outlines advantages for utilizing the Steel Joist Institute's (SJI's) CJ-Series composite joists, optimal joist spacing, suggested loading designations, typical vierendeel panel configurations and locations, calculation of a CJ-Series joists ultimate moment capacity, design of welded shear studs on CJ-Series joists, typical referenced UL fire ratings, methods for predicting floor vibration, SJI's floor bay tool, and description of typical projects in the Boston, MA, area recently utilizing SJI CJ-Series joists.
