A proposed probabilistic framework for performance-based durability engineering is motivated by the successful implementation of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center's framework for performance-based earthquake engineering. Both approaches combine several stages of analysis linked through a limited set of "pinch point" variables, which allows modeling flexibility. The analysis extends to the computation of information useful to decision makers, and can also provide sensitivity analysis of the modeling stages to be used to direct future research. The major stages, variables, datasets, and models to be used are outlined with corrosion in reinforced concrete as the cause of deterioration.
