Seismic Design Retrofit Detailing for Special Structures

With increasing knowledge of structural performance during seismic events, new building design has evolved to include redundancy, building regularity, ductile detailing, and continuity among many changes that set precedence for the retrofit of existing buildings. Many existing buildings require a seismic retrofit not only to perform to the level of similar new buildings during an earthquake but to even perform at all. However, it is impractical to seismically retrofit all existing buildings. This is why priority is given to retrofitting various essential facilities and in many instances, enforced through regulations. Many municipalities are required to seismically retrofit many of their essential facilities because of the economical and life safety impacts of not doing so. This paper will outline the seismic retrofit of an essential water storage facility for the City of San Francisco in accordance with ASCE 41-06. In addition, this paper will discuss in brief the temperature analysis performed on the reservoir.
