The northern and central appalachian basin coal region - the upper freeport and pond creek coal bed assessments

The Upper Freeport and Pond Creek coal beds are two of six coal beds being assessed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in the northern and central Appalachian basin coal region (Fig. 1). In descending stratigraphic order, the coal beds to be assessed include the Pittsburgh, Upper Freeport,and Lower Kittanning coal beds in the northern part of the coal basin and the Fire Clay, Pond Creek, and Pocahontas No. 3 coal beds in the central part of the coal basin. The coal assessments are being conducted in partnership with the state geological surveys of West Virginia (WV), Pennsylvania (PA), Ohio (OH), Maryland (MD), Kentucky (KY), Virginia (VA), West Virginia (WV), and Tennessee (TN).
