Activation and validation of new atlas IIAS launch facility at vandenberg air force base

Space Launch COmplex-3 East (SLC-3E) at Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB), has been extensively modified for Atlas IIAS launch capability. Significant changes include new mobile service and umblical towers, new ground equipment to support a high energy Centaur upper stage, a remoter launch control center, and modern ground computer systems. Integration of the existing 1950's vintage Atlas weapons system facility and ground equipment with design concepts from Cape Canaveral Air Station launch facilities and advanced computer technology lead to significant challenges. After the completion of construction and system validation tsting, the complete launch operation process including cryogenic propellant loading, was demonstrated on a flight article Atlas IIAS launch vehicle. Activation operations were completed in April 1998 and SLC-3E is ready for Atlas IIAS launch operations.
