Direct Metal laser sintering (DMLS) process was developed a few years ago by electrolux Rapid Development (ERD) and a German machine manufacturer EOS. The idea is based on net shape furnace sintering of patented bronze based powder blend, modified for laser sintering process. The DMLS has now been in commercial use for more than three years at Electrolux as well as other European prototype manufacturers and it shas found its niche in prototype tooling and part production. In December 1998 a new steel based powder blend DirectSteel ~(TM) 50-V1 was launched onto market simultaneously with improved Eosint M 250 Xtended laser sintering machine.
