The impact and importance of macronutrients are well understood nad documented in relation to biological wastewater treatment. IN recent years, interest in micronutrient additives has grown, primarily due to suuplier claims. The term"micronutrient formulation" is a generic name applied to a wide variety of products containing trace minerals, enzymes, alkaloids, vitamins and other compounds claimed to enhance or stimulate microbiological activity. Most claims of enhanced performance attributed to micronutrient formulations are based on actual plant applications where controlled experiments are difficult to run. Little data, either plant or laboratory, have been presented to support the claims of enhanced performance under controlled conditions at realistic product dosages. This paper will present the findings of a laboratory study conducted using respiromentry to evaluate the impact of one micronutrient blend on a pulp and paper mill effluent. This study focused on mills with aerated stabilization basins, reather than activated sludge.
