Among the major algae related problems encountered when treating eutrophic waters are unpleasant tastes and odors and filter clogging. In Korea, filter clogging problems occur periodically every pring and autumn at water temperatures of about 10 °C. Over the past years, filter clogging problems have been observed more frequently, concurrent with a rapid decrease in raw water quality. In early 1998, filter clogging problems occurred in a number of Korean water treatment plants that take raw water from the Han and Nakdong river basins. Common problem diatoms involved in filter clogging include Asterionella, Fragillaria, Tabellaria, and Synedra (Montgomery, 1985). Among those, Synedra has been a major filter-clogging diatom in Korean water treatment plants during the last few years. During this study, which was conducted in the spring of 1998, filter run times decreased to below 5 hours.
