The chlorination of drinking water results in the production of carcinogens, such as trihalomethanes, which pose significant health risks [1]. Consequently, there has been considerable interest in alternative disinfection techniques, such as the use of ozonation, hypochlorite or chlorine dioxide. Bromate, chlorite and chlorate are inorganic disinfection byproduct (DBP) anions produced when drinking water is treated using either ozonation or chlorine dioxide [2]. Bromate itself has also been judged as a potential carcinogen and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has estimated a potential cancer risk equivalent to 1 in 104 for a lifetime exposure to drinking water containing bromate at the 5 μg/L level[3].
