Chloramines have recently replaced free chlorine as the secondary disinfectant at many water treatment utilities. This switch to chloramination is generally the result of a disinfection by-product (DBP) control strategy. Approximately 22 percent of 438 utilities surveyed in 1990 were utilizing chloramines as a secondary disinfectant, and the percentage is expected to increase as more stringent DBP regulations are adopted.
