The biofilm formation potential was measured in several raw and treated waters inNorway. In some of these waters the molecular weight distribution of the dissolvedorganic carbon was measured as well.All the treatment processes for removal of natural organic matter investigated,coagulation/separation,membrane filtration and ion exchange,reduce the biofilmformation potential measured as biodegradable organic carbon considerably.Coagulation/separation and ion exchange reduce the biofilm formation potentialmeasured as assimilable organic carbon. Membrane filtration gave only a minorreduction in the amount of assimilable organic carbon.Coagulation/separation reduces the dissolved organic carbon in all molecular weightfractions.Chlorination increases the assimilable organic carbon but not the biodegradableorganic carbon.
