An experimental bio - remediation system was installed in a series of lakes containingpotentially eutrophic water. The system consisted of a single floating reed bed ( 750 m2 ) anda number of semi - buoyant units containing decomposing barley straw ( ca. 5 g/m3 ) whichwas deployed in two bankside storage lakes. The in - lake bioremedial systems were shown tosignificantly reduce the biological productivity of the eutrophic river source flowing from theupstream reference lake. The reduction in the phytoplankton or ” biological load ” of the rawwater will facilitate cost - effective treatment through a conventional treatment plant.
