DEVELOPMENT OF HYDROCARBON RESOURCES AND CONSERVATION OF ECOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT IN TARIM OIL FIELD

With the total area of 5.6 × 10~6 km~2, the Tarim Basin is the largest inland basin in China. There are rich hydrocarbon resources in Tarim Basin, its total reserves of hydrocarbon resources are about 19.15 billion tons. It is also an important base of cotton, sugar, melon, fruit and animal husbandary. There are also non-alternate tourist resources such as the Ancient Silk Road and Loulan Ancient City.The Taklimakan Desert with area of 3.34 × 10~6 km~2 is in the cental part of Tarim basin. It is the largest desert in China and second largest mobile desert in the world. Its natural environment is unfavourable i.e. extremely dry climate, fragile ecological environment. Desertification, salinization of soil and deterioration of vegetation are becoming worse. Animal habitats are shrinking and the number of animals is decreasing.The largest desert oilfield in China with a capacity of 2 million tons per year is under development. We develop oilfields with environmental concern. As a result the development of the oilfield did not cause any damage to the environment. On the contract a favourable change took place such as natural vegetation rehabilitation in the area with a high water table and the reappearance of special birds and their numbers increased. We were able to obtain such a result by undertaking the following measures:1. well organised environmental protection group and adherence to national Law and national or CNPC standards;2. waste water and produced water treated in a central plant, treated water re-injection or used for irrigation;3. utilisation of centralised heating system, emission control technique and associated gas recovery technology for pollution control and energy saving;4. sand prevention and sand control measure along the desert highway;5. construct an engineering demonstration of artificial greenland and ecological areas in the hinter land;6. carrying on some measures to protect wild animals.'Development of Hydrocarbon Resources and Conservation of Ecological Environment in Tarim Basin' has been listed in Priority Programme for China's Agenda 21. The Canadian government is willing to support the project with millions of U.S. dollar in grant money. CNPC will also invest the project with great amounts of money in order to set up a demonstration engineering pilot scheme of development of hydrocarbon resources and conservation of ecological environment. CNPC acting as the national oil company will certainly develop resources rationally and conserve the ecological environment and benefit future generations.
