Interpreted seismic sections and derived maps in time and depth are the fundamental tools used by the explorationists to locate new field wildcats and production wells. These data are then modified, reinterpreted and revised on the basis of the final well results. During the drilling stage there is a gap in the use of geophysical information. We will demonstrate that today we have the possibility to fill efficiently this gap and to reduce the exploratory and operational risk while drilling. The aim of the technological effort produced by AGIP in the last two years is to move the geophysical analysis from the 'post mortem' stage of a drilled well to the while drilling stage giving the possibility to the explorationist to compare in real time the 'pre-drilling' prognosis with the actual well results. A real time improvement of the subsurface geological model can nowadays be obtained through the simultaneous integration of different and various while drilling technologies such as MWD, LWD and SWD. Optimization of the exploration and drilling results is achieved through a dedicated software, named DREAM~([™]), based on the innovative approach of a continuous depth imaging refinement. Theory and successful applications on real cases are presented and discussed.
