Catalytic materials which may bring important improvement or technical breakthrough to the petroleum refining technology for producing reformulated gasoline and low sulfur and aromatics diesel fuel are discussed. For the purpose of producing reformulated gasoline, catalytic cracking will be required to produce more gaseous olefins and i-C_4 as raw materials for etherification and alkylation. The major improvements may be achieved by the use of modified beta zeolite for enhancing the selectivity of the C_4 fraction, high silica Y zeolite with low hydrogen transfer ability, etc. Catalytic distillation for MTBE production now becomes an important petroleum refining process, the technological breakthrough of this process is possibly achieved by the development of a composite distillation packing coated with a molecular sieve or acidic resin on its surface as catalyst. For the production of reformulated gasoline, the alkylation process is highly important in refineries. The solid acid catalysts, to replace currently used HF and H_2SO_4, such as heteropoly acid, solid superacids, molecular sieves, etc., are under extensive research, the challenging problem of rapid activity decay of these catalysts may be solved through new reactor system design, etc.For the production of low sulfur and aromatics diesel fuel, the next generation of HDS, HDN and HDA catalysts may emerge from the research of high surface binary metallic nitrides or amorphous nickel alloys.
