We investigated the AC loss characteristics of AC superconducting cables by measuring the AC transport current losses in the AC external magnetic field. The tested cables of (6+1) configuration have different twist directions and pitiches. The AC losses of a strand composing the cable were also measured to compare with the losses of the cable. The mesurement results showed that AC losses of the cable were significantly dependent on the twist directions and pitches. We also evaluated the AC losses caused by the longitudinal and aximuthal field components produced by the transport current of the cable and the external field because of the twisting of the cable and strand based on the theortical model which we previously developed. It was found that the theoretical results well explained the dependence of the AC losses of the cable on the twist directions and pitches.
