A coil support system has been developed for the ATLAS superconducting solenoid magnet. It must support the coil rigidly enough against electromagnetic decentering forces and the weight of the cold mass. Due to limited space available to the solenoid, a triangular-shaped coil support made of glass-fiber-reinforced-plastic (GFRP) is proposed. Space spherical bearings are built in at each joint to eliminate the bending moment in the support. The support design is optimized by finite element analysis. Choices of winding direction of the fiber and GFRP material were made to increase the mechanical strength. A test to confirm the strength was carried out after fabrication of several prototypes.
